But I digress.....As I was noting, my heart felt heavier this week thinking of people in our area who were still walking to work in this weather, lived in the wetlands and it might be flooding, had rain coming in on them as they slept. Sure the windows in our house are old and very breezy but I had to kick myself a few times as I thought of how much worse many others were experiencing. And it is hard because I feel guilty.
I feel guilty most days that I drive to the mall to get groceries because I literally pass someone at EVERY light who is begging for food....begging for money. I am very tender hearted. I learned at our mission training last year that I am a people pleaser and so it is hard to say no to people. I also know that giving money out from my car or home is really not a service to anyone...it is a dependancy and but I think of the verses in Matthew 25.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
But then I am reminded I can do small things...and though I may not be able to change living circumstances or job creation....I can be the light of Jesus to them. I can smile...ask them their names....make them feel they are worthy...and they are. Christ died for them the same as me.
I am encouraged when I get the opportunity to hear the stories of people whose lives have been transformed through the work of Living Hope and the good news Christ brought to them. So I will press on and strive each day to just be different...to stand apart and to be as much like Christ as I can.
Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
